H+ Concentration (PPM)

Methodology & Sources

Since pH is the negative logarithm of H+ ion concentration in Molarity (mol/L), we reverse it by taking the antilog: [H+] = 10^(-pH). Multiplying by the atomic weight of Hydrogen (~1 g/mol) and 1000 yields the concentration in mg/L (PPM).

The underlying formula used is:

10^(-pH) * 1000

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert pH to PPM?

First calculate the Molarity of H+ ions: M = 10^(-pH). Then multiply by 1000 to get mg/L (PPM).

Is this exact?

It is exact for the concentration of Hydrogen ions (H+), but does not account for total acid concentration in buffered solutions.
