1. The Formula

PPM = mg/L ÷ Specific Gravity (SG)

Derivation:

  • mg/L = Mass / Volume
  • SG = Density (kg/L)
  • (mg/L) ÷ (kg/L) = mg/kg = PPM

Is mg/L the same as PPM?

Only for dilute water solutions. For water (SG ≈ 1), mg/L = PPM. For other liquids, divide mg/L by the Specific Gravity to get true PPM.

How do I convert PPM to mg/L?
