mg/L to PPM Converter (Liquids)
Convert Milligrams per Liter (mg/L) to Parts Per Million (PPM). Strictly for liquid solutions with Specific Gravity correction.
Tip: For water, use SG = 1 (mg/L = PPM). For oils, acids, or chemicals, enter the actual Specific Gravity.
PPM
Methodology & Sources
Scope: Liquid Solutions Only
This tool provides density-corrected conversions for liquids. Do not use for gases (use mg/m³) or soil corrections.
1. The Formula
PPM = mg/L ÷ Specific Gravity (SG)
Derivation:
- mg/L = Mass / Volume
- SG = Density (kg/L)
- (mg/L) ÷ (kg/L) = mg/kg = PPM
2. Specific Gravity Reference
| Liquid | SG | 1000 mg/L in PPM |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Water | 1.00 | 1000 PPM |
| Seawater | 1.025 | ~975 PPM |
| Light Oil | 0.90 | ~1111 PPM |
3. Example Calculation
Convert 1000 mg/L of Oil (SG = 0.92):
PPM = 1000 ÷ 0.92 = 1087 PPM
