Methodology & Sources

Scope: Liquid Solutions Only

This tool is for converting liquid concentrations. Do not use for gases (use mg/m³) or solid mixtures (mg/kg).

1. The Formula

mg/L = PPM × Specific Gravity (SG)

Derivation:

  • PPM = mg solute / kg solution
  • SG = kg solution / L solution
  • Multiply them: (mg/kg) × (kg/L) = mg/L

2. Common Specific Gravity Values

Substance Approx. SG Impact on 1000 PPM
Pure Water 1.00 1000 mg/L
Seawater 1.025 1025 mg/L
Crude Oil (Light) 0.85 850 mg/L
Sulfuric Acid (Conc.) 1.84 1840 mg/L

The underlying formula used is:

PPM * SG

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1 PPM equal to 1 mg/L?

Only for water. Because water has a density of ~1 kg/L, 1 ppm = 1 mg/L. For other liquids, you must multiply ppm by the specific gravity.

Why does Specific Gravity matter?

It corrects for density. PPM is mass-based (mg/kg), while mg/L is volume-based. Specific Gravity (kg/L) is the bridge between mass and volume.

How do I convert mg/L to PPM?

Divide by Specific Gravity. To go from mg/L back to PPM, use the formula: PPM = mg/L ÷ SG. This removes the density factor.

Can I use this for gases?

No. Gases requires a different formula involving Molecular Weight and Temperature. Use our PPM to mg/m³ for Gases tool.

Does temperature affect this conversion?

Yes. Liquid density changes with temperature. For high-precision lab work, ensure the Specific Gravity value is corrected for the sample's temperature.

Is this valid for seawater?

Yes, if you use SG=1.025. Seawater is denser than fresh water. 1000 ppm of solute in seawater equals approximately 1025 mg/L.

Can I use this for solids or soil?

No. Soil results are reported in mg/kg (equal to ppm). There is no 'per liter' volume component in solid analysis.
